COMMUNITY RONGOĀ AND NGAHERE DAY
WITH GRAEME ATKINS AND MIDGE GOLDSMITH
An interactive, hands-on day of learning about our connections to our taiao (our wider environment).
Join us to hear from renowned environmental expert Graeme Atkins share about the ngahere (forest) here in Te Tairāwhiti. Learn about some of the treasures of the ngahere the incredible mahi being done to protect our native forests up and down the coast.
Then spend an afternoon learning about rongoā Māori (traditional medicine) with Margaret (Midge) Goldsmith and her students from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. We will have hands-on demonstrations showing how to use native plants to maintain our health and address common ailments. If the weather is good Midge will take us into the ngahere at Pipiwhakao to learn how to identify and harvest some of these important plants. This is a whānau-friendly event for all our community, sponsored by Moananui. Lunch and dinner are provided by Whakatō Marae and we have a free bus leaving from the Gisborne i-Site. You’re welcome to come just for the morning or afternoon session if you prefer – although our bus will only be travelling at the start and end of the day. |
